Joanne Hughes

Joanne’s passion for Restorative approaches in Healthcare comes from her experiences after losing her daughter Jasmine in 2011. A lack of ability to lean in to the harms she experienced, to understand impacts, needs, and what was needed to restore wellbeing, trust and the relationship she had with the organisations who looked after Jasmine and the staff involved in her care was a significant source of extra avoidable suffering on top of her tragic loss.

Joanne agrees that system learning is a vital and worthy goal after harm events but equally recognises the importance of attending to the wide ranging human impacts from these events.

In 2013 Joanne set up the website www.mothersinstinct.co.uk to support improvements in communication and parent engagement in children’s patient safety, and to provide information and emotional peer support to parents bereaved through healthcare harm. Joanne sometimes supports individual families that live local to her affected by the loss of a baby or child where adverse events occurred.

Joanne has been a Patient Safety Partner on a number of national Patient Safety Projects focused on improvements in paediatric patient safety, involving patients in patient safety, and responding to harm events.

Joanne has trained in both Restorative Practice and Mediation, and is a member of the international collaborative for Restorative Approaches in Healthcare. She has given evidence to both the Health and Social Care committee and the Restorative Justice APPG on the need for more restorative and less adversarial responses to healthcare harm for everyones benefit. She delivers training on Patient, Family and Staff Engagement and Involvement in Learning Reviews through a restorative lens, and also Restorative Approaches/Responses in Healthcare in Partnership with Janine Carroll of Restorative Now.

Joanne works as a Restorative and Lived Experience Advisor for trusts interested in developing a Restorative Culture and Restorative approaches after harm.

She is a regular speaker at national and local patient safety conferences.
